An Open Letter to Stephen King and Other Essays eBook Jenny Twist

I just spent a lovely afternoon reading this. It's worth five stars just for the articles about Spain, where the author lives. They're pieces about a rural, mountainous area of Andalusia (I think), where time stands still to a certain extent, and they made me long to be there - which is what the best articles about foreign countries do, isn't it? These were my favourite of the 'other essays', followed by some of Ms Twist's views on the effect of Women's Lib, the differences between the sexes, and why the media promotes skinny as the ideal shape for women. Agree, agree, with all of these!

Also in this collection are lots of articles with help for the new writer. Jenny talks about her experiences, and also dares to embrace controversial subjects, ie, how many free self-published books are just badly written: "For every great writer who never made it out of the slush pile in the publisher's office, there are hundreds who should never have been in print in the first place". Yet at the same time she is helpful, and illustrates her own mistakes and misconceptions, she has obviously become jaded about indie publishing companies too, as she comments that some of them have relaxed their standards to the extent that they will accept almost anything; she now self-publishes.

I'd definitely recommend this collection, it's something you can keep dipping into!

An Open Letter to Stephen King and Other Essays eBook Jenny Twist Reviews

An Open Letter to Stephen King and Other Essays by Jenny Twist
(Non-Fiction)

A fantastic collection of essays, magazine articles, blog articles on interesting topics. Some of the topics; Life in Spain, Spanish customs, Religion (in Spain), publishing, writing, American & British writing, book covers, escapology, gun control, gun control in U.S. vs. Britain, and much more.

MS. Twist voices her opinion on many various topics in her own unique way. With truth and often humor. I found myself laughing out loud, nodding my head in agreement and completely drawn in by her thoughts, opinions and stories (especially about Spain).

There is so much more I could say, but I don't do spoilers. I highly recommend this fascinating, informative, fun read to book lovers of all genres.

*This book was a gift to me
I've loved everything I've read so far by Jenny Twist, and have never yet felt "well, this one's just okay." I expected, I must confess, that this collection of non-fiction pieces might be the one to end that streak. Wow, was I wrong! The strengths I've always seen in Ms. Twist's fiction -- especially the breadth of her range combined with her unmistakable and entirely original voice -- carry over into these short essays. She reminds me of what the word "essay" means a very personal exploration of the author's subject. As great essays will almost invariably do, these invite readers to explore their own experiences and beliefs. Highly recommended!
I've been an avid fan of Jenny Twist's stories for a number of years, so, not surprisingly, have also come across her non-fiction writing on various blogs. She is an extremely talented author with an often wicked and very British sense of humour that really appeals to me and I never tire of reading her work.

It was therefore a real delight just before Christmas to find this collection of essays and articles reflecting on life, people, places and practically everything else. Even though I've read some of them before, the re-reading was nonetheless a great treat. In fact, they are probably better in the re-reading because you can appreciate her wit and style more. It would be impossible to have favourites, but the essays on Spain and in particular the three articles on the Andalusian villages so beloved of the author touched me so powerfully that a visit to them is now high on my bucket list. I defy anyone to read them and not feel themselves transported in spirit and long to make the experience physical.

But there is so much more in this diverse collection. Whether she's describing sex education in the (I'm guessing here) early sixties, the generic female inability to read maps, grammar usage and abusage or the journey to publishing success, her penmanship and humour shine through and make them all such a pleasure to read. On a more serious note, she provokes topical debate over the gun culture in America and attitudes to guns and violence in Britain. She explores the portrayal of evil in modern fiction and opens her doors and her heart to give us some insights into her own life and struggles, which have provided inspiration for her many stories.

And of course, ghosts (and the occasional vampire) infiltrate the pages! A great horror writer, Twist recounts her own chilling experiences, some of which inspired her stories, while others lie in wait ready to inhabit stories yet-to-come.

'An Open Letter to Stephen King and Other Essays' makes engrossing reading whether you prefer factual writing or fiction. It is well worth the read at any time of the year, but I couldn't wait and devoured it immediately. It certainly enriched my Christmas reading.
